The programme “ENGINEERS IN ACTION” is one of the Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives of MYTILINEOS with a strong international dimension. The programme is implemented as part of the commitments undertaken by the company as initiator of the programme GEFYRA (Greek Enterprises For Youth Reinforcement Acceleration), which combines into a single initiative the EU talent apprenticeship programme and the European Pact for Youth (www.csrhellas.net/initiative/init-gefyra/) and is based on the key pillars of professional expertise/training, practical training and professional skills building. It is also in line with the company’s commitment to the Global Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN for 2030 and, in particular, to the Quality Education and Decent Work & Economic Growth Goals.
The two previous annual cycles of the programme were fully successful, as all the engineers who participated were able to find jobs within less than three months after they had completed the programme, while a number of them joined directly the Metallurgy Business Unit of MYTILINEOS.
Going beyond this excellent result and wishing to adopt a scientific approach in order to fully map all the advantages that such actions offer for supporting the young generations, the company analyzed the programme’s Social Value using the internationally recognized Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodology.
The result of this analysis was particularly encouraging, as it was shown that every €1 invested in the programme “ENGINEERS IN ACTION” generated the equivalent of €4.24 of Social Value. The term Social Value is used to denote the translation into economic terms of the changes brought about by the programme “ENGINEERS IN ACTION” in the course of life of the young Engineers who took part in it. For the young Engineers who participated in the programme’s first two cycles, the most important changes, as identified by themselves, were the following:
